French Onion Soup

Total Time: 3 hrs 10 mins Preparation Time: 10 mins Cook Time: 3 hrs

Ingredients

  • Servings: 8
  • 3 large onions, sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 5 (16 ounce) cans beef broth
  • 2 (16 ounce) cans water (use broth cans)
  • 1/4 cup port wine
  • 3/4 cup burgundy wine
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup swiss cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 loaf french bread, sliced

Recipe

  • 1 in a large pot melt butter with oil over med-high heat, add onions and cook until translucent, 12-15 minute.
  • 2 add flour and sugar and cook for 1 minute.
  • 3 add broth, water, salt and pepper. simmer for 30 min and stir in wine. simmer for 2 more hours.
  • 4 preheat broiler. pour soup into oven safe crocks, top with a piece of bread and top with cheese.
  • 5 place on pan in case of spillage and broil for a few minutes until cheese is bubbly.
  • 6 enjoy!
