Fran's Stewed Red Cabbage

Total Time: 3 hrs 15 mins Preparation Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 3 hrs

Ingredients

  • Servings: 4
  • 1 red cabbage (about 2 lbs.)
  • 2 cups water
  • salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1/2 apple, diced
  • 2 -3 whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons flour
  • salt and pepper

Recipe

  • 1 wash and cut the core from the cabbage.
  • 2 coarsely shred and put in a dutch oven.
  • 3 add the water and salt to taste.
  • 4 bring water to a boil.
  • 5 add the veggie shortening.
  • 6 cook about 30 min.
  • 7 add the vinegar, apple, and cloves.
  • 8 cover and simmer 2.5-3 hours.
  • 9 add sugar.
  • 10 melt butter in a separate pan.
  • 11 add flour and stir until combined.
  • 12 add to cabbage mixture and stir until thickened.
  • 13 add salt and pepper to taste.
